“Counter-argument” – project and platform for young Lithuanian painters, already for a second time inviting You to the private view of annual exhibition, which will take place on February 8th (Friday) at 6:30pm at gallery “Meno parkas” in Kaunas (Rotušės a. 27, Kaunas).

The term “conter-argument”, which defines the concept of the exhibition cycle, used as a transformation of different expressions into “conversation” between painters participating in the exhibition, their artworks and viewers. The "discussion", developed in exhibitions through the distinction and individuality of each author, reflects versatility of painting language and questions the possibility of painting as a means of thinking and communicating.

Like last year, the young generation of painters will present their works at the exhibition, using painting as form of communication, where they eagerly raise questions or doubts with each other: communicating, discussing, arguing, striking, or perhaps silently observing the events of painting in today's context. “Counter-argument” becomes a platform and a document proving an importance of such "communication" and leads into the conversation where the main theme is painting.

Each year a conceptual part of the exhibition is revealed in different formats. The works exhibited at the exhibition last year, along with the texts, resembled anonymous “tweets” who claimed, contradicted, or persuaded curtain artists‘ position and a viewpoint on painting. At the second “Counter-argument” exhibition, we are more focused on questions of – how everyone creates a distinctive system of communication. As painting is a visual language, so the way of speaking is also through a view, where motifs, tools, techniques or symbols are like letters of a certain meaning – a visual representation that creates meanings in canvas, object, film or sound and the exposition itself.

Participants are given more autonomy at this year's exhibition – they choose their own works and principle of how its going to be exhibited. Their choice is always motivated – artists actualize the problems of contemporary painting in the chosen direction, thus drawing the audience's attention to themselves and their declared posture on relevant issues. In this way, the viewer is introduced into a visual discourse that can be used to contradict certain ideas, problems and a different means of “speaking” chosen by each participant.

The title‘s “Counter-argument” offered movement – “against –“ is turned into “for –“ – controversy, as a diverse forms, means, ideas, and ultimately – young painting. This is the free, radical platform, seeking to introduce chaos, knock out the comfort zone, criticize for the sake of progress, resist or maintain, deny or claim – thus demeaning the painting stigma, destroying established norms or fashions. Moreover, the purpose of each annual exhibition is to reveal step-by-step the most radical movements, newest approaches, methods and tools in the media of painting.
