Hope in the Suffering

Meno Parkas Gallery is proud to present an exhibition dedicated to the 90th anniversary of National Prize Laureate Leonas Strioga. It is one of series of exhibitions dedicated to this occasion, each of them had its own flavor. In Meno Parkas Gallery it will be presented collection of favorite artist‘s sculptures and premier of several newest artworks. Name of an exhibition „Hope in the Suffering“ has originated from one of his sculptures - it was chosen by the artist himself.

Leonas Strioga is one of the few artists who‘s artworks are perceived, loved and anticipated by such a wide audience. With his intimate creative approach, he embraces not only well educated art professionals, but also those who just wondered into the exhibition accidentally and appreciate it with their hearts and feelings. And it is no wonder. At a first glance roots of his artworks can be traced to traditional Lithuanian folk art, but if you take closer look - they are very universal, their archetypes are recognizable to art lovers of various countries. Sculptures of Leonas Strioga gives everyone what their hearts are craving for – gentleness, sadness, spiritual values, poetry and casual daily stories. But above it all they all proclaim kindness – an axis of life itself. Perhaps that is the reason why those laconic and abstract forms of sculptures seem to possess inner shining.

In over than 70 years of creative life Leonas Strioga generated rich and special heritage – wooden sculptures made by unique artist‘s chopping technique, where manifestations of realistic and avant-garde style can be seen. Acknowledgment achieved by exhibitions of this prominent artist in Lithuania and abroad puts him in the lines of the most important art world figures.

Exhibition supported by the Lithuanian Council for Culture and the Lithuanian Artists' Association.
